AIM:
To enhance the knowledge of the students about various measuring instruments,
techniques and importance of error and uncertainty analysis.
OBJECTIVES :
(i) To provide knowledge on various measuring instruments.
(ii) To provide knowledge on advance measurement techniques.
(iii) To understand the various steps involved in error analysis and uncertainty
analysis.
UNIT I MEASUREMENT CHARACTERISTICS 12
Instrument Classification, Characteristics of Instruments – Static and dynamic,
experimental error analysis, Systematic and random errors, Statistical analysis,
Uncertainty, Experimental planning and selection of measuring instruments,
Reliability of instruments.
UNIT II MICROPROCESSORS AND COMPUTERS IN
MEASUREMENT 5
Data logging and acquisition - use of sensors for error reduction, elements of microcomputer
interfacing, intelligent instruments in use.
UNIT III MEASUREMENT OF PHYSICAL QUANTITIES 10
Measurement of thermo-physical properties, instruments for measuring temperature,
pressure and flow, use of sensors for physical variables.
UNIT IV ADVANCE MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES 8
Shadowgraph, Schlieren, Interferometer, Laser Doppler Anemometer, Hot wire
Anemometer, heat flux sensors, Telemetry in measurement.
UNIT V MEASUREMENT ANALYSERS 10
Orsat apparatus, Gas Analysers, Smoke meters, gas chromatography, spectrometry.
