AIM:
To understand the relationship of man and space and an exposure to design methods.
OBJECTIVES:
 An overview of interior design theory.
 To study colour and the perception of colour.
 To give an exposure to human perception of spaces.
 Understanding the relationship between spatial elements and kinesthetics.
 To study the interior design process
 To study special design needs.
 To understand design imagery.
UNIT I INTRODUCTION 6
Vocabulary of design, the elements of interior design, colour, furniture, interior materials,
lighting, accessories, painting, sculpture, systems design, etc. Concepts and philosophies used
in Interior design. Current issues and future directions.
UNIT II PSYCHOLOGY OF SPACE 6
Relationship between man and space. Design and human perception. Cognitive theories and
gestaltan principles of psychology of space.
UNIT III SPACE PERCEPTION 8
Colour theory ,colour wheel and colour schemes and perception of colour.
Relationship of spatial elements like floor, wall windows, door, stairs, roof light colour to the
psychology and perception of space.
Kinesthetics – understanding perception while in movement and space organization around
such a phenomena.
UNIT IV THE DESIGN PROCESS 4
Sequential outline, programming, concept development, design development, design
implementation. Case studies.
UNIT V INTERIOR DESIGN FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY SPECIAL NEEDS 6
